Celebrate Youth Week Hamilton May 4 – 11, 2013! Youth Week Hamilton brings youth of different ages, cultures and areas of the city together to celebrate their achievements and contributions, recognizing the importance of young people to the community. The Hamilton Youth Advisory Committee will be kicking off seven days of community events with a Youth Week Hamilton Launch in the forecourt of City Hall on Saturday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The launch will feature guest speakers, as well as a free BBQ, live music and giveaways. Additional Youth Week events hosted by various Hamilton organizations include: Amazing Race Hamilton –Youth will have a blast exploring the unexplored across Hamilton. They can snap a photo or grab a brochure from the places they visit! May 4 to 10, Youth can get a race site list and more information at the Youth Week Hamilton Launch at City Hall. YMCA Summer Jobs for Youth Program May 4 – 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.: Information Session & Resume Clinics – Youth 15 to 18 years old with little to no previous work experience living in east, north or central Hamilton can attend this session and learn about the Summer Jobs for Youth Program, a six-week paid employment placement in Hamilton during July and August. Resume clinics at 2:30-3:30 p.m. and 3:45-4:45 p.m. YMCA Employment, Training and Settlement Office – 25 Main St. W., Suite 105 (at MacNab) Hamilton Public Library Saltfleet Branch, 131 Gray Road, Stoney Creek May 6 – 6:30 p.m. Movie: BULLY – BULLY offers insight into the often cruel world of the lives of bullied children through intimate glimpses into homes, classrooms, cafeterias and principalsʼ offices. Watch the film, and then stay for a discussion on this important topic. Parents and educators welcome! Offered in partnership with the HWCDSB. Good Shepherd Youth Services is hosting a variety of activities for youth age 16-21 in support of Mental Health Week, including a spa day and a movie night. May 6 to 10, Various locations served by Good Shepherd Youth Services. Dream Out Loud Mental Health Conference,May 7 – 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. City Hall – Council Chambers, 71 Main Street W. This conference will attract youth mental health groups and school delegates to have a united voice on how to encourage more leadership, coordination, evidence-informed strategies and youth participation in mental health resources and services. The Great Race Slam,Lyric Theatre, 434 King St. W., May 10 – doors open at 5:00 p.m.; open mic slam at 6:30 p.m.– Olympic style poetry competition. A dual emphasis is put on writing and performance, encouraging youth poets to focus not only on what they’re saying, but how they are saying it. Songideʼewin: Aboriginal Narratives – exhibit showcasing the artwork of Sir John A. MacDonald Secondary School’s Aboriginal studies program participants.
